landscaping idea
With the temperature dropping rapidly at this point, its time to winterize the home. For one, you will stay warm while indoors (important aspect to being indoors), and two, you will save valuable money by not letting cold air seep in, and warm air escape. This will save you money on your heating bills. And we all want to save a few bucks if we can right?

1) Rubber Weather Stripping - You can buy this at most all hardware stores and all you need to do is cut strips to the dimensions of your windows where there are gaps and the self-adhesive will keep out drafts minimally alter the appearance of your windows. The advantage is that is is easy to apply and rather inexpensive, the downside is that when you go to remove the strips in the spring, it may damage the paint already on your windows.

2) Window Insulation Film - This plastic shrink film (think Saran Wrap for windows) is adhered to the inside window frame with double-stick tape, then heated up slightly with a hair dryer to shrink the film and remove any wrinkles. The bonus is that the shrink wrap still allows in light and is an effective and inexpensive procedure. The drawback is that it is quite visible to the naked eye and looks like you shrink wrapped your windows. Itll save you money though, guaranteed!

3) Cellular Shades - Cellular shades are great because they insulate and still let in light at the same time. The positive here are that they can be ordered and custom cut to fit the dimensions of your windows. The drawback is that they are not as effective at insulation as some other methods and can be more inexpensive than other options. But if you are seeking more for aesthetics, these are a great option.

4) Heavy Layered Fabric Curtains - If you have the cash to invest in some heavy layered curtains, these are a fantastic alternative to cellular shades as they keep out cold drafty air and can be matched to your homes interior decor. The drawback is that they can be expensive and must be stalled correctly because of their sheer weight.

5) Draft Snakes - These fabric tubes are placed near window sills and underneath door frames to prevent cold air from seeping in. They are effective and inexpensive to purchase or make yourself. You can get all of the materials at a nearby arts and crafts store and you can fabricate these at home if you have a needle and thread (sewing machine preferred for ease, durability and time).
